Old Fashioned Christmas Stocking Card

It feels odd to be making Christmas cards when it’s still nearly 90 degrees outside but we have to get ahead before life gets crazy. Spellbinders was kind enough to send me this die set to create some fun holiday inspiration for all of you. The Old Fashioned Christmas Stocking set is FULL of dies you can use to create so many different looks for cards. In fact, today’s card is a little larger than the typical A2 because the garland I created wouldn’t fit otherwise. :). This die set is part of the Simple Stories Simple Vintage Old-Fashioned Christmas collection.

I started by die cutting all my elements from various colors of cardstock scraps. I leaned in to traditional colors with browns, darker greens and a wine red for the stocking. To create some dimension and interest on my die cuts, I ink blended with coordinating ink colors. For the darker cardstock, I actually used black ink to create the dimension which is a great trick. Sometimes coordinating inks won’t show up on darker cardstocks so using black for shading is a great alternative.

To anchor my focal point (the stocking), I cut a couple ovals from a warm gray and golden brown cardstock. The brown serves as the mat for the warm gray. I’m sure most everyone has nesting oval dies in their stash. If you don’t, you should! Mine are the Hero Arts Infinity Ovals dies which I also have in rectangles and circles. I adhered the smaller oval to the larger using liquid glue and then adhered those to a slate gray card base measuring 4 1/2 by 6 inches. To create a highlight around the focal image, I used black ink to blend around the edges of the card base.

Next I arranged my greenery and adhered with liquid glue, allowing the ends of each piece to lift away from the card. I occasionally placed my assembled stocking over top to check my placement. Once my garland was adhered down, I added foam tape to the back of my stocking and placed that on the front of the card.

For my sentiment, I used the Home for Christmas Sentiments press plate and die set. I foiled a few of the sentiments using Copper Glimmer Hot Foil and my Spellbinders Glimmer machine. I die cut those using the coordinating dies and then chose one for the front of my card. I used foam squares to pop that up for some dimension. To add some shine, I used some espresso flat confetti embellishments.

The inside of my card features the same die cut ovals as the front of the card. I didn’t feel I needed to use white for the inside because the gray was light enough to write a message. Then I added one of the foiled sentiments and a leftover die cut with liquid glue. That helped tie it back to the design on the front.
