Stitched Christmas Card – Spellbinders Stitched Joy

What is it about stitching on paper that is so relaxing? It just feels quiet and peaceful to me. I first learned about stitching on cards from Jennifer McGuire. After I bought my first stitching die set from Spellbinders, I was hooked. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend you do.

The card I’m sharing today features the Stitched Joy set from Spellbinders. I love this set because it fills an A2 card so nicely. Add some embellishments and you’ve got yourself a card. To start, I picked my cardstock colors. I chose a dark green cardstock (Evening Evergreen from Stampin’ Up) and some copper metallic cardstock. The copper cardstock is one I found on Amazon. It’s a thick matte paper that resembles a cross between glitter and foil.

I took the large stitching die from the set and cut that from the dark green cardstock three times. I glued two of those together with Art Glitter Glue avoiding the stitching holes. It made that piece more sturdy to stand up to the stitching. The third piece I will use later once the stitching is complete. Next, I cut the letters for Joy out of the copper cardstock.

Now comes the fun part! I used embroidery floss for my stitching. It comes as six-ply meaning it’s 6 individual threads wound together. As is, it’s too thick to pull through the stitching holes so I separated out the threads and then combined three together. I purchased a 48 color pack from StitchableCards.com and used embroidery floss bobbins to store them. The colors I chose for this card are listed below.

The Spellbinders stitching dies are great because they leave guide marks to show how to do your stitching. Taking the double-stacked die cut, I stitched with one color at a time, taping the ends of my floss to the back of the die cut with some double-sided tape. Trust me, the back of the piece is a hot mess. Once my stitching was complete, I glued the third die cut to the back to make it easier to adhere to my card. Then, I adhered the word “Joy” using the letters I cut from the copper cardstock.

For my card panel, I knew I wanted to use the same dark green cardstock but I wanted to add a little something extra for interest. I cut a panel down to 4 by 5 1/4 inches and embossed with the Christmas Wrap Pattern embossing folder from Spellbinders. I use that folder so much. I just love it! To make the panel pop, I cut a mat from the copper cardstock measuring 4 1/8 by 5 3/8 inches. I adhered both panels together using Art Glitter glue. Then, I adhered both panels to my dark green A2 card base measuring 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches scored at 4 1/4 inches.

Using the same liquid glue, I adhered my stitched die cut to my card, making sure to center it. The layers of cardstock and floss make it look as though it’s popped up off the card with foam tape but it isn’t. For the final touch, I added Espresso Grounds confetti embellishments from Trinity Stamps. I love these because they are flat and will go through the mail much easier. Trinity Stamps has tons of these flat embellishments so be sure to check them out.

For the inside, I kept it fairly simple. I cut a piece of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 80lb cardstock to 3 3/4 by 5 inches. Then I cut a mat from copper cardstock measuring 4 by 5 1/4 inches. I placed the white panel in my Misti Stamping tool and placed my sentiments from The Greetery’s Sentiment Suite : Christmas Stamp set. I chose Rainforest ink from Concord & 9th to stamp the sentiment because it most closely resembled my card base color. Then I adhered my copper mat and the sentiment panel inside my card with liquid glue.

I hope you like this stitched card and try out a stitching die if you haven’t already. Jennifer McGuire has some great videos on stitching if you need some how-to’s. Now, I think I’ll go find my Stitched Christmas Tree die from Spellbinders and have some more fun. I appreciate you stopping by today. Now go get crafty!
