Use Your Scraps! – Spellbinders Be Bold Blooms

Hi all! I was itching to play with color and some die cuts to make a spring floral card. It’s starting to warm up here and it’s giving me LIFE! It’s kind of crazy how energized I get when winter starts to make it’s exit. Anywho, I grabbed my cardstock scraps and my Be Bold Blooms die set from Spellbinders to have some fun.

How do you store your cardstock scraps? I throw mine in storage pockets sorted by color. I just grabbed some pink, purple, orange, yellow, blue and green scraps and started die cutting. I cut lots of pieces from various colors because I wasn’t quite sure of my design yet. Then I assembled the die cuts as shown in the example provided with the die set.

I wanted to frame the flowers so I chose my Essential Ovals dies from Spellbinders to cut an oval frame from Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 80lb cardstock. This would help call attention to the floral arrangement and break it up from the background. With that cut, I started arranging my flowers. I varied the greens I used for the stems and leaves, ending up with three different shades. For the center flowers, I chose a very bold pink and purple. Then I tucked other flowers in around those along with the greenery. The arranging is the hardest part. You have to know when enough is enough and it just takes practice. Odd numbers are your friend. Once I was happy with the look, I used foam squares to pop up the two largest center flowers. Then I adhered the rest of the flowers and leaves with liquid glue.

When I placed the oval onto my white card base, it kind of fell flat. So I grabbed an A2 panel of cardstock in the same orange color as the flowers in my arrangement. I placed that in my Argyle Plaid 3D embossing folder and ran that through my die cutting machine. I adhered that to my A2 card base using liquid glue. Then I centered the oval with my florals onto the card base and adhered with liquid glue. I didn’t use foam tape because the flowers added enough dimension.

Now for the sentiment. I LOVE mass producing sentiments so I had lots on hand. That’s what I do when I feel uninspired….prep work. I used the Mini Everyday Sentiments from Spellbinders which is a hot foil plate and die set. I had used various foil colors to make an assortment of sentiments so I chose a ‘Happy Birthday’ in Altenew Mirror Black Hot Foil. To pop it up, I adhered three thin strips of white cardstock scraps to the back. Then I adhered that to the center of my floral arrangement with liquid glue. The finishing touch for the front was clear and silver sequins that I’ve had on hand for some time.

Obviously I have to dress up the inside a bit. Remember I die cut LOTS of flowers and leaves at the start? I put some of those extras to good use. I took three of the smallest blooms in purple, orange and blue. To the back of those, I adhered one of the smallest leaves. Then I adhered those to the bottom right corner of the inside of my card. From my sentiment pile, I pulled a coordinating sentiment ‘Sending Birthday Wishes’ in the same black foil and adhered with liquid glue. Now my card was complete!

If you love die cutting, I hope this inspires you to grab a set and just start playing. You don’t always have to have an idea for a card at the start. Let yourself be inspired in the process and just have fun. This card definitely shook me out of my winter slump. I appreciate you stopping by today. Now go get crafty!
