Mushroom Card – This Was So Fun!

Mushrooms are quite trendy right now. You find them on decor, wallpaper and even clothes. If you follow Amy Rysavy (and you should), you know she has been hooked on these Mushroom Stems wafer dies from Simon Says Stamp. She has a whole playlist on her YouTube channel of cards she has made with these dies. That playlist is the entire reason I bought the products I used in this card. If you want more inspiration, definitely check it out. The additional dies I used are the Fiddly Leaf and Grand Corner Leaves wafer dies also from Simon Says Stamp.

I started by die cutting all my pieces from Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 80lb cardstock.

Then I pulled out my trusty Waffle Flower Grip Mat to help hold my die cuts in place while I inked them. I used my Concord & 9th small blending brushes because these pieces are fairly small. The colors I used are also from Concord & 9th.

I was not very precious with my ink blending. I just roughly applied color. For the mushroom stems, I covered the whole piece in Wheat and then blended Mushroom just on the right edge. Then to add some interest to the mushroom caps and stems, I decided to splatter some additional color. For the caps, I pressed my Cayenne ink pad onto an acrylic block and mixed with a bit of water. Then I placed my top layer mushroom caps into my splatter box and, using my splatter brush, I applied droplets of color. Next, I cleaned off my block and applied Wheat ink. I used the same process to apply a few droplets of wheat on the caps as well. Then I allowed those to dry off to the side. For the stems, I splattered with Mushroom ink.

Once dry, I assembled my mushrooms. For the stems, I used two die cuts to make them a bit more sturdy. The first stem I adhered behind the mushroom cap. Then the top layer I adhered to the front but I didn’t tuck it under the top layer of the mushroom cap. I cut it at an angle to allow the cap to tilt to one side.

I wanted my card to be an arch shape so I pulled out my Essential Arches set from Spellbinders. I cut a panel from a piece of dark blue cardstock using the largest die in the set. Then, using the same die, I cut a card base to the same shape. To do this, I made my A2 card base with the same dark blue cardstock. Then, I placed the cutting edge of my arch die just next to the folded edge of my card base. This would keep my card base intact but allow the die to cut the top edges to make a shaped card.

Next, on my card panel, I ink blended the edges with Midnight ink just to make it a bit darker. Then I assembled my scene. I placed the Grander Corner Leaves on the bottom of the panel with liquid glue allowing the larger leaves to float freely off the card. I placed the the mushrooms in the center those leaves with foam adhesive squares. I had to cut the squares in half to fit the stems. For the Fiddly Leaf, I cut these into pieces and placed behind the mushrooms and leaves already adhered to the card.

The sentiment is from the CZ Design Just a Note wafer die. I cut the words from Mushroom cardstock twice and then the shadow layer from vellum. I glued one layer of the words to the front of the vellum layer and then the second layer to the back to prevent the glue from showing through the vellum when I adhered to my card panel. This is a trick I learned from Amy Rysavy and it’s just genius. To embellish my card, I used Pocket Change Metallic Confetti mix from Trinity Stamps.

Now for the inside. I think I like the inside just as much as the front. I used the third largest arch in my Essential Arches set to cut a panel of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 80lb cardstock. I placed that into my Misti Stamping Tool using my Misti Sticky Mat to keep it in place. Then I chose a sentiment from the Just a Note Notes stamp set from CZ Design. I love stamps sets that are made specifically to go inside cards. The insides don’t get enough love in my opinion. I stamped that with Versafine Onyx Black ink and then adhered to the inside of my card using liquid glue. To pull in the design from the front, I used my two smallest additional mushrooms and one of the leaf clusters from the Grand Corner Leaves set. I adhered those to the bottom right of the card panel. They do have a bit of dimension but it’s not an issue when closing the card.

That’s a wrap for my first mushroom card using the Mushroom Stems dies from Simon Says Stamp. I will be making more because I LOVE this set. You can incorporate them into so many things. If you haven’t yet, check out Amy R over at Prairie Paper & Ink. Her playlist using these dies is fantastic. Just play all. Trust me. Thanks for stopping by today. Now go get crafty!
